With 8 million pieces of plastic pollution finding its way into our oceans on a daily basis, and our plastic output set to double by 2034, marine life is under a very imminent threat and we have a responsibility to act immediately.

Recent studies have shown that, each year, plastic pollution is responsible for the death of 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds. Due to only 9% of plastic being recycled – the rest incinerated, sent to landfill, or dumped in the ocean – our plastic habit is destroying marine life, and affecting the continuation of other species.

Stunning coral reefs are slowly deteriorating, and we have a very small window within which to act. These desperate times have been the driving force behind our Water Cause, which is explained in full below.

1,447 POUNDS

We want your FourState Points to be used for good, to continue your positive impact on the planet and the people living on it. For every 20 points donated, we will ensure that a pound of plastic is retrieved from our oceans to be disposed of in a more efficient manner.

Of the 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic polluting our oceans, a large portion is made up of a floating island of plastic, spanning roughly 3 times the area of Spain.

Beyond the damage imposed on marine life itself, the degradation of plastic poses a risk for humanity, too. As they decompose (very slowly, mind) the plastics turn into micro-plastics, which are ingested by the marine creatures and, eventually, find their way back into the food chain, latterly to be consumed by us.

We work with clean-up organisations based in Cape Town, South Africa, which lead groups of volunteers to remove rubbish from beaches and oceans in the local area.
